What Is a Syllable?

A syllable is a beat or spoken part of a word. For example, rabbit has two syllables: rab-bit.

Learning to hear syllables can help children become more aware of how spoken words are organised. It is one useful part of developing language and literacy skills.

Helpful ways to practise:

  • Say the word slowly.
  • Clap or tap once for each spoken part.
  • Listen to the parts separately.
  • Try again whenever you need to.

This activity complements, but does not replace, structured literacy teaching.
