Explore the World Through the Senses
Sensory Sensations is a child-friendly learning collection designed to help children understand how we experience the world through our senses.
At Inclusive Education NZ, we want children to understand that people can experience sound, touch, movement, taste, smell and visual information in different ways.
The collection is available in multiple formats so children, families and teachers can choose the way that works best for their learning needs and preferences.

More Than the Five Familiar Senses
Children are often introduced to sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, but our sensory systems also include important senses that help us understand movement, body position and what is happening inside our bodies.
The Sensory Sensations collection already introduces proprioception, helping children understand how the body knows where it is and how it is moving.
As the collection grows, Inclusive Education NZ can continue adding resources about other sensory systems and the many ways people experience and respond to their environment.
Why Sensory Awareness Matters
Understanding sensory differences can help children make sense of their own experiences and become more understanding of the needs and preferences of others.
Understand Yourself
Children can begin to recognise the sounds, textures, movements, smells and environments they enjoy or find difficult.
Understand Others
Learning about sensory differences can help explain why another child may cover their ears, seek movement or avoid particular textures or environments.
Support Inclusion
When sensory differences are understood, adjustments such as quieter spaces, movement breaks and flexible learning environments become easier to recognise and accept.
Learning in Different Ways
Sensory Sensations is part of Inclusive Education NZ's wider goal of providing children's resources in different formats so more children can read, listen, participate and learn in ways that work for them.
