Helping Children Understand Disability and Inclusion

Disability awareness helps children understand that people move, communicate, learn, play and experience the world in many different ways.

At Inclusive Education NZ, we create child-friendly resources that encourage positive conversations about disability, accessibility, difference, participation and belonging.

Our aim is not simply to teach children about disability. We want disability to become an ordinary and accepted part of their understanding of the people and communities around them.

Understand disability. Recognise barriers. Include everyone.

Our disability awareness collection is being developed in different formats so children and teachers can choose how they prefer to read, listen and learn.

Disability Does Not Always Need to Be the Lesson

Disability awareness is important, but children also need to see disabled people represented naturally in everyday stories and life.

A character who uses a wheelchair does not always need a story explaining why they use a wheelchair. They can be an explorer, friend, problem-solver, classmate or adventurer whose disability is simply one part of who they are.

Inclusive Education NZ combines both approaches: resources that specifically teach children about disability and stories where disabled and non-disabled characters simply participate together.

What Can Children Learn About?

Disability awareness can introduce children to much more than individual disabilities. It can help them understand accessibility, barriers, communication, participation and belonging.

Understanding Disability

Learn that disability is part of human diversity and that disabled people have different abilities, experiences, interests and lives.

Accessibility

Explore why ramps, accessible playgrounds, communication supports and inclusive environments help more people participate.

Visible & Non-Visible Disabilities

Help children understand that some disabilities can be seen while others may not be immediately obvious.

Different Ways of Communicating

Introduce children to the idea that people may communicate through speech, sign language, communication devices, gestures and other methods.

Barriers & Participation

Help children recognise that sometimes a person's biggest difficulty comes from an inaccessible environment rather than their impairment.

Inclusion & Belonging

Explore what it means for everyone to have opportunities to participate, contribute, make friends and belong.

Disability Awareness Resources for Schools

Teachers can use our disability awareness resources for classroom reading, group discussion, wellbeing activities, inclusive education learning and conversations about accessibility and belonging.

These conversations do not need to wait until a disabled child joins a class. Understanding disability is useful learning for every child.

Introducing disability positively from an early age can help children become more comfortable asking respectful questions, recognising barriers and understanding that people participate in different ways.

Building Understanding Through Education

Inclusive Education NZ is developing a growing collection of disability awareness resources to help children understand difference, recognise barriers and contribute to more inclusive schools and communities.
