Sensory Sensations PDFs

Helping Children Understand Their Senses

The Sensory Sensations collection helps children explore how our bodies receive and understand information from the world around us.

These free printable PDFs introduce different senses in clear, child-friendly language and can help children learn that people may experience sound, touch, movement, taste, smell and visual information in different ways.

At Inclusive Education NZ, we want children to understand that sensory differences are part of human diversity. Learning about these differences can encourage curiosity, understanding, empathy and greater acceptance of the different ways people experience everyday life.

We all experience the world through our senses, but we do not necessarily experience it in exactly the same way.

Explore More Than the Five Familiar Senses

Understand Sensory Experiences

Children can explore familiar senses such as sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch while also learning about less familiar sensory systems such as proprioception.

Celebrate Different Experiences

Some people may be more sensitive or less sensitive to certain sensory information. These resources can help children understand that different sensory experiences are not wrong or unusual.

Encourage Curiosity

Simple explanations and relatable examples can help children think about their own senses and become curious about how other people may experience the same environment differently.

Sensory Learning Resources for Schools and Families

The Sensory Sensations PDFs can be used in classrooms, early learning environments, homes and community settings as an introduction to sensory awareness and neurodiversity.

Teachers can use the resources to support classroom discussions, health and wellbeing learning, disability awareness, inclusive education activities and conversations about why some children may respond differently to noise, touch, movement, smells or busy environments.

Families can also use the PDFs to help children talk about their own sensory preferences and understand the experiences of siblings, friends and other people around them.

Why Sensory Awareness Matters

Build Understanding

Understanding sensory differences can help children recognise why another person might cover their ears, avoid certain textures, seek movement or need a quieter environment.

Support Inclusion

When children understand that people experience environments differently, it becomes easier to talk about reasonable adjustments, accessibility and supporting each other.

Normalise Difference

Sensory preferences and needs are part of everyday life. Learning about them early can help reduce misunderstanding and make difference feel ordinary rather than something that separates children.
